What To Not Put In A Dishwasher
Your dishwasher is an integral part of your kitchen. By ensuring that you’re placing the right items in there, you’ll be protecting your dishwasher and kitchen items from damage. Here is a list of what to not put in a dishwasher.
Wooden Items
Whether they’re cutting boards or utensils, keep them out of the dishwasher if they’re made of wood. Dishwasher detergent can scratch wood over time or even cause it to crack within your dishwasher. Always ensure that you’re hand-washing items made of wood.
Fine China or Painted Plates
Make sure that they’re carefully hand-washed to save your special dishware from any damage. These items are delicate and can fade or lose their intricate details in the dishwasher.

Antiques
Similarly to fine china or painted plates, anything that’s considered an antique should stay out of the dishwasher. Putting them inside a dishwasher may risk them becoming damaged or even broken.
Sharp Knives
Dishwashers can dull knife blades even if you think the blade is sturdy. It is also much safer to wash them by hand because you’ll reduce the risk of cutting yourself while loading and unloading them into the dishwasher.
Aluminum Cookware
After a while, aluminum items can fade and dull over time if put in the dishwasher too many times. They are technically able to be washed in a dishwasher, but it’s important to keep in mind the amount of times you put them in there.
Cast Iron
Items that are cast iron have a nonstick surface and dishwashing detergent will take that away. This will leave cast iron items at a risk to rust and no longer be of good use.
Hollow Handled Knives
The high temperature in dishwashers can cause the adhesive in hollow-handled knives to weaken. This will result in the knives slowly breaking apart and eventually be out of shape.
Crystal
Anything crystal should not be placed in the dishwasher. It can rish the crystal becoming cloudy and damage its intricacy.
Milk Glass
Similar to crystals, the colours of milk glass can also change if placed in the dishwasher. Always hand wash these items to ensure that they don’t turn yellow from being in the dishwasher.
Non Stick Pots and Pans
Dishwashers can cause these items to break down in time. Eventually they’ll flake and ruin the nonstick finish on the items.
Pressure Cooker Lids
These should be washed by hand in warm, soapy water. If they’re washed in the dishwasher, you can risk the small food particles or detergent lodging in the regulator or safety valves.
Various Plastics
Heat from dishwashers may damage or misshapen certain plastic items. Even if they’re marked “dishwater safe,” try washing them by hand if you’re able to or at the very least place them on the top rack only.
Insulated Pitchers, Drinkware and Travel Mugs
The high temperature from dishwashers will also damage these items. Specifically the vacuum seal would be damaged and so it’s best to leave these items out of the dishwasher.
Acrylics
Always hand wash anything made of acrylic. Dishwashers will likely cause cracks and wash away any designs on them
Printed Measuring Cups
Although these are technically able to go into the dishwasher, you should opt to wash them by hand. If they’re placed in dishwashers too many times, you risk the printed measurements on these cups fading away.
Dishes with Food
It goes without saying – Empty your dishes into the garbage or compost before putting them into your dishwasher. By doing so, you’ll save your dishwasher from becoming clogged. Dishwashers are an essential part of kitchens. Make sure you’re putting the right items inside to avoid damaging your kitchenware and your dishwasher. By doing so, you’ll avoid any inconveniences and ensure you’re having the best kitchen experience. We hope that this list of what not to put in a dishwasher has been helpful.
