Types of Asbestos

Many people will not realize that there are several types of asbestos.  The term asbestos covers 6 naturally occurring fibers minerals, 4 are shown here.

Amosite

Amosite Asbestos

Amosite asbestos or brown asbestos, is one of the most hazardous types of asbestos.  This is the second most used in North America with about five percent of asbestos materials used in buildings being Amosite.

Anthophylite

Anthophyllite ranges from brown to yellowish in color and mainly contains magnesium and iron. A rarer form of asbestos, anthophyllite was not used as often in consumer products. Anthophyllite can be found in some cement and insulation materials.

Chrysotile

Chrysotile Asbestos

Chrysotile is the most commonly used variety of asbestos, comprising 90 to 95 percent of asbestos used in buildings in North America. It can be found in ashphalt, cement, plastics, roofing material and rubber.

Crocidolite

Amosite asbestos or brown asbestos, is one of the most hazardous types of asbestos.  This is the second most used in North America with about five percent of asbestos materials used in buildings being Amosite.
