When To Change Your Furnace Filter
There are many things we do to improve air quality in our homes. We buy air purifiers, open windows, and clean often. But many people miss one of the most important air-quality control systems — changing your furnace filter.
The air filters in your furnace (or air conditioner) protect it from dust and debris while also improving air quality. And yes, they do need to be changed more than once a year.
Rule of Thumb
If you are unsure how often your filter needs to be changed, do it at least every 90 days. But, if you have pets, allergies, or young children, you should change your filter more often to ensure your breathing in quality air. The frequency in which you use your filter as well as the size of your home is also a factor. Additionally, different types and sizes of filters require different changing frequency:
- Cheaper fiberglass filters, change every month
- Average filter, change every 3 months
- High-end fiberglass filters, change every 6 months
Allergies
If anyone in your household suffers from breathing-related problems, you want to ensure the air is as free from harmful particles as possible. People with allergies should try to change their filter every 6 weeks and may want to invest in a higher-quality filter to avoid allergy-related symptoms.

Pets
Pets cause an increase in dander and odour that make changing your filter every 2 months necessary. Change the filter more when your pet is shedding, usually during the summer and winter.
Smokers
It’s a well-known fact that tobacco smoke can be very harmful, so if you have a family member that smokes be sure to change your filter more than normal. The more people in your home that smoke, the more you should change your filter.
Young Kids
Young kids are especially susceptible to poor air quality. If young children are in the house, change the filter every 2-3 months.
Benefits
By now, you should realize that changing your furnace filter is very beneficial. Some of the benefits are:
- Improving air quality
- Preventing dust build-up
- Preventing allergies
- Increasing the lifespan of your furnace
You don’t want to mess with your furnace, and you certainly don’t want to mess with your families health, so change your furnace filter.
